Leonardo DaVinci High School, located in temporary quarters in the "T Buildings" at Davis High School, opened as an autonomous small school in August 2004 with 140 students. With an eventual capacity of 400 students in grades 10-12, DaVinci High School will eventually be housed in its own building in the Education Center to built on the UC Davis campus. The small school is designed to promote increased communication between teachers and students, involving group research projects and laptop computers.

A committee, which included student and parent groups, selected the name Leonardo DaVinci High School as it unites the past with the future, and connotes an integration of art and sciences, futuristic thinking, genius problem solving.
