Napa Valley Unified School District opened New Technology High School in September 1996. The building is an extensively renovated former elementary school, in the city of Napa.
NTHS was designed for a capacity of 240 students in 11th and 12th grades recruited from area high schools. In November 2003, the NVUSD Board approved the expansion of NTHS to a 9-12 school. The facilities, technology, and program expansion will bring in 100 9th grade students in Fall 2004, in addition to 11th and 12th graders. Six new teachers will join the nine current faculty; NTHS also has a Counselor and Internship Coordinator. In school year 2005-2006, enrollment will reach capacity at 400 students in grades 9-12.
NTHS was honored as a U.S. Department of Education Demonstration Site even before it opened. Subsequently, Gov. Pete Wilson held it up as the model for other schools to follow for his Digital High School grant program. Among other honors are its designation as a New American High School and a state-level “Cool School.”
NTHS has and cultivated a culture of trust and responsibility, and provides a college prep curriculum with integrated, team-taught courses meeting state standards. In addition to complying with district graduation requirements, students must complete:
- Integrated grade-level Humanities Courses
- Powerskills course (including introduction to digital portfolio design, office productivity software, Lotus Notes, Learning System tools, keyboarding)
- Community service and senior year internship (50 hours)
- Complete at least one year of Digital Media Design and Critique
- Napa Valley College courses (12 UC/CSU transferable college credits)
- A web based, professional digital portfolio (outcomes-based)
Napa Valley College actively supported the development of NTHS from its inception and teaches courses on site. NVUSD also developed numerous other partnerships with local and national businesses and community organizations to open and maintain the school.
